Heart Or Love Emoji Named Top 'Word' Of 2014

The top word of 2014 has been announced, and it's not even a word.

According to Global Language Monitor, a company that tracks trends in language usage worldwide, their 15th annual survey found the emoji for love was the top word of 2014.

Heart and Love emojis and variations of them appear billions of times a day across global languages and cultures. This is the first time an ideograph has captured Word of the Year honors.

"Each emoji represents an emotion, expression, or state of mind, or a person, place or thing, so much so, that we see the birth of the AlphaBorg or AlphaBit." said Paul JJ Payack, President and Chief Word Analyst of the Global Language Monitor.

According to languagemonitor.com, there are about a thousand emoji characters now officially recognized by Unicode Consortium, the official keepers of coding that forms the basis of the Internet.
