Being a Good Father

TravelZoo Review
Hello Good Day devoted!! It's once again time for this experienced hotel hopper to dish after a recent business trip to Los Angeles. When work rips me away from the creature comforts of my 2,000 square foot Sacramento home, I make sure to indulge when it comes to planning a hotel stay. I may seem spoiled but let me assure you, it's quite the necessity because no one wants a crabby producer! And to keep me happy I have come to trust the Kimpton Hotel Group. No matter where I journey, my first choice is Kimpton, any Kimpton. Having just experienced Hotel Wilshire (one of two Kimptons in LA) earlier this year, I decided to stick to what works and book Hotel Palomar located in the intriguing neighborhood of Westwood. One look around at the swanky homes surrounding the hotel and I knew I was truly in La-La Land.

My first impression of Hotel Palomar was that this place offered the best of both worlds -- the comfort and class you'd come to expect from a four or five star hotel combined with the flash and pizzazz of a social hotspot. What other hotel greets you with live music and complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres just moments after stepping foot through the front doors?! I had been there five minutes and already I was under the Kimpton spell. Even before I had my room keys, I found my travel anxiety had diminished and my hunger subsided. My business trip was quickly becoming pure pleasure!

Whether you're looking to unwind with a couple cocktails at the restaurant and lounge or slip into something more comfortable like the plush hotel-supplied robe and slippers, Hotel Palomar caters to every type of guest. Being the well-rounded gal I am, I decided to partake in everything!! Maybe it was the panoramic views of the city or the king bed that resembled a cloud or the bottle of red wine strategically placed in my room, but a few hours locked inside my enormous suite seemed like the only natural thing to do. Releasing my "inner foodie" would have to wait until the following night because once the robe went on, there was no way it was coming off. Tonight it was all about the room service and (more specifically) the room service burger.

My time for edible adventures came the following night when I sat down at my table for one at the hotel restaurant Blvd. 16. One look at the menu and my taste buds started cranking. I quickly decided on the fritto misto with calamari, rock shrimp, veggies and Sriracha aioli. Talk about a sumptuous and satisfying way to kick off a meal! The seafood was plump and flavorful and the aioli added a nice bit of heat. I followed my starter with the chef's favorite flatbread because any favorite of any chef is bound to be delicious. One bite and I was in, all in. Topped with BBQ short rib, mozzarella, basil, sea salt and chili flakes, the flat bread was a party in my mouth and is a MUST for all Blvd. 16 diners. That should've been enough, but I decided to finish my meal (and my diet) off with the shrimp risotto. And I'm glad I did!! The pea puree and lemon zest played well together, but what set the risotto apart (in this humble food maven's opinion) was the braised fennel. Not only does it happen to be one of my favorite veggies, it adds a depth of flavor to any savory dish. The icing on the Blvd. 16 cake was the vanilla latte my server surprised me with at the tail end of my dining experience. Believe me when I say this, it was the single best latte I've ever had the pleasure of locking lips with. It's something I will never forget and have been craving ever since.

Honestly, I could go on and on but I will spare you the wordy review. If you are in the LA area and in need of some serious R&R, book a stay at Hotel Palomar and experience this Kimpton gem as well as Blvd. 16 yourself. You will glad you did.
