Town: Man must remove dead chickens from tree outside home

TIVERTON, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island man has been ordered to take down more than a dozen dead chickens hanging from trees outside his home.

The Newport Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/1SBeIbn ) that the town of Tiverton has notified David Bertrand that he's violating a zoning ordinance barring dead animal dumping.

The notice — dated Thursday — says Bertrand could face fines of up to $500 a day if he doesn't take down the chickens, including at least one rooster.

Bertrand, who does keep live chickens, has told police that he's drying out the skins and feathers of the chickens before properly disposing of them.

Bertrand can appeal the notice to the town's Zoning Board of Review.

Town Administrator Matthew Wojcik has said animal control workers previously found that the living animals are healthy.
