Eatery has duck on menu and ducklings jumping off its roof

ASBURY PARK, N.J. (AP) — One New Jersey restaurant has duck on its menu and ducklings jumping off its roof.

Seven ducklings hatched on the roof of the Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten in Asbury Park, then wanted to follow their mother to the ground Thursday.

The Festhalle is proud to welcome Hans, Tobias, Greta, Pavol, Filip, Marta and Sebestian! A few weeks ago we discovered nest of 7 duck eggs on the lower deck roof. We got some expert advice and everyone said to leave the nest and Mama alone. We were told it would be about 3 weeks till they hatched. We did our best to disguise the locations and check on her regularly. When I arrived to the Biergarten today Momma Duck was wandering around the entrance ramp. I asked her if she was ok and she just quacked at me. As I turned to go in a something fell from the roof and almost dropped on my head. I looked up to see the eggs had hatched and 6 more ducklings were about to jump! I began yelling for help as I attempted to catch the next jumper. They seemed be surviving the jump. Sous Chef Tim Spielman heard my yelling and managed to catch 2 in his baseball hat. One got lost in the brush. I helped him out and brought him to catch up with Mama. Adria Gordon (office manager) ran out and helped catch everything on film. Jason from US foods was part of the cheering team as well. It was amazing experience. All 7 Biergarten babes made it to Wesley Lake. What an honor to experience the nest of eggs, Mama sitting on them for weeks and now their first steps. (Mama enjoyed everyone's company, 2 yoga classes, a few weekends of bier drinking patrons, 3 bands, 2 high school reunions, The Pink Party and Pride Weekend!!!) This video is the best we could do in the excitement of the event! Hope you enjoy. Prost! Jennifer

Office manager Adria Alfro says workers spotted the nest several weeks ago and shielded it from customers.

Alfro says when her boss, Jennifer Lampert, arrived Thursday, the mother duck was on the ground quacking. Then she felt something brush by her and realized the ducklings were jumping.

The sous chef used his hat to catch two of the ducklings, and Alfro stopped traffic so the family could cross the street and enter a lake.

Perhaps the ducklings realized the German restaurant was offering a duck special this week.
