This morning we're meeting one Girl Scout who received a HUGE honor on Friday night! 6th grader at Crocker Riverside Elementary School Abby Egawa was awarded the Girl Scout Medal of Honor after saving her friend and classmate Rosie from choking on a piece of candy at school! Abby performed the Heimlich maneuver on Rosie after learning it in Girl Scouts 3 years ago!

Recipe: Barbera Simmered Cherries with Thyme & Orange

Cherry season is upon us. This easy, sumptuous recipe adapted from L'Atelier Vert, a French gardening website, is delicious on roasted pork or duck, fried ham, grilled venison, panna cotta, cheesecake, fromage blanc, fresh ricotta, blue cheese, flourless chocolate cake, chocolate gelato or vanilla bean ice cream. The wine preserves the cherries, allowing you to store it refrigerated for up to a month. Makes about 2 quarts
Ingredients:
2 1/2 lbs. ripe cherries, washed, stemmed and pitted
1 1/2 cups Barbera, Syrah, or fruity red
1 c. sugar
6-inch strip of orange rind, pith removed
½ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1 sprig fresh thyme
1 bay leaf
Directions:
In a large stainless steel pot, bring the wine and sugar to a boil. Add the orange zest, pepper and herbs to the wine. Simmer 10 minutes. Add the cherries. Slowly bring to a simmer and cook, covered over very low heat for 15-20 minutes or until the cherries are soft. Remove the cherries with a slotted spoon, placing them in a shallow baking dish to cool. Reduce the wine syrup by half on medium low heat. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. Remove the orange zest and set aside. Discard the herbs. Julienne the orange zest and add to cherries. Spoon cooled cherries and wine sauce in airtight jars. Refrigerate up to one month.
