Active World War I-era bomb dug up at park

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — A live World War I-era explosive found at Fort Adams State Park in Rhode Island has been safely detonated.

The Newport Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/1NvBYJi ) the bomb was found last week by the fort's facility maintenance manager on a desk in an office and was safely detonated by a Navy ordnance squad.

Officials say the bomb had a 6-inch-long cylinder and was originally dug up May 5. Workers at the time didn't realize the bomb was still active and moved it to an office.

Newport Deputy Fire Chief Paul Faerber says the maintenance manager immediately recognized what it was and took the bomb outside before contacting authorities. The detonation team detonated the ordnance in a grassy area.
