On Cars, Cal, a TV show, and YOU.

What a 3 months it’s been. As evidenced by my lack of blogging, one could have easily concluded that too many medium-rare steaks had finally caused my demise, or, as it turns out,  that I have been overwhelmed.

It all started back in early May, when a pretty good guy who happens to be in charge on the two CBS owned television stations in Sacramento offered me what can only be described as a fantasy for a working class kid who was raised by a single mom in a not-so- great neighborhood  of New York.

“So, you want to do a TV show?” Kevin asked bluntly.

“Umm, yes. Please?” I whispered back.  I’m sure I stammered.

Thus began the last 100 day journey that culminated this Sunday with the 3rd LIVE episode of The Car Czar Show with Cal Worthington sitting next to me on my very own set. (A pretty cool guy, by the way!)

I came home after the show yesterday with my head spinning. I cuddled with my kids on the couch. I felt numb. Unworthy. And I felt eternally grateful.

Grateful surely to station management for the incredible faith and confidence they have offered. Grateful to our staff and crew for their hard work, and certainly grateful to my family for putting up with me during the last several months of endless meetings and as many late nights in front of my laptop creating  yet another test script.

But mostly, I am  grateful to you.  The viewer. You are my friends. You are my customers. You are the ABSOLUTE REASON I DO THIS.

I will let you in on a dirty little secret. I really don’t like being on TV. I am well aware that I’m too old, too ugly, too fat, and too void of any traditional talent to have any business being in—well—this business!

But the reason I do this now and will continue to do this until I drop is I because I serve you.

Completely, absolutely, and unconditionally. I answer to no one. No automaker, no parts supplier. I answer only to you.

I am keenly aware there are a lot of bad guys out there posing as mechanics. I’m equally cognizant that as an industry, we mechanics have benefitted for generations by keeping you, the paying public, as much in the dark as possible. And here’s a reality check: our collective and cultural ambiguity served us well. We fixed your cars. We took your money. And often we, as an industry, misled you.

Well that all changed more than 15 years ago when KMAX asked me to join their team in order to shed some light on the business of cars. A guy named Brent was my boss then. And remains so to this day. This guy deserves a free oil change for putting up with me, for sure.

So, here we all are. A new decade.  A new show. But I arrive here with the same old mission: and that is to inform, to empower, and to educate.  To dispel the myths, to challenge the status quo, to HELP YOU.

So as we move forward, towards what we pray to the Almighty will be a long run of Car Czar Shows, I am more committed than ever to YOU. Always know that. Always believe that. And always remember that after I kiss the foreheads of the sweetest kids in the world on any given night, that my thoughts inevitably turn to all of you. The viewer. For you all are my boss. But better yet, you are all my friends. I will never, ever, forget that.

Doug, you do yourself a disservice by saying you are old, ugly, fat and talent-less…you are none of those, but what you are is real…what we see is what we get, the honest truth from a guy who knows what he’s talking about and wants to share that knowledge. That is rare, indeed…

  • Carol

Doug I tuned in for the first time this past weekend. I was impressed on how entertaining the show was. You pulled off a few good ones. I know nothing about fixing vehicles but since I am one who send our fleet in for this and that all the time I find listening and learning is worth it. I say don’t cut yourself down, you don’t look old or fat, and continue to give great honest information in a fun way.I’m sure your audience will grow onset and at home. Thanks for accepting the offer to do the show.

  • Patricia

Doug, you are smart, eloquent, and cute, cute, CUTE. My husband lets me watch your show because he likes cars. He’s a fan, too. But he doesn’t think you’re cute — brilliant, yes. And fast on your feet with your answers to the viewers’ questions. We really enjoy your show and are glad to see you on TV.

  • Trish Markland

I have watched you on T.V. and I just get the feeling that if one was to bring a automobile for repair they would get an “HONEST” answer which is rare! Your show is great and kepp the attitude you have now and you will go far… Congrats!!

    Dear Car Czar,
I took my 2003 Ford Escape to your El Camino location to have a mechanic look into the problem I am having with power steering and leakage, this was on Monday 7/18/11…I was told by you at front desk, that you were backed up for that day and to come in the next day at 8am…
I brought my vehicle in 7/19/11 @ 8am, signed in and was told it would take a couple of hours, and they would call me when they had looked it over…apprx 10amI called your shop and was told, no one had a chance to look at my vehicle yet, because they were backed up and would call me back in a couple of hours.
Close to noon called back and spoke with Doug, who went to check out the problem, upon your return, you told me my vehicle still had not been looked at, because there was a lot of back up from Monday, and I would receive a call after lunch and after the vehicle was looked over.
It is 9:31pm and I have as yet to receive a call from you or your mechanics…Will phone you tomorrow morning; before I take 2 buses to get to your shop and pick up my vehicle.

    Maria

I just want to say, I’m a HUGE fan, and your the 1st. Mechanic I feel as a female I can trust. I heard you say that Brakes should Never squeek, squeel etc.. I had mine done at Midas in Modesto 2 years ago. They started the same noise that got me to Midas, Spring of 2010. I only drive in town, less than 1000 miles a year. I was told Midas uses Ceramic Pads, and they Make noise??? During the inspection, I was told I had 80% pads, But that I needed another job done. Well approx. $400.00 later, I’m still worried. I have a 1991 Toyota Camrey, 4 cyl.. it has about 180,000 miles. I am the 2nd. owner since 04. It has been a great car. I am now on Disability, and at a loss what to do. I do drive my Grandkids Daily, and want them safe. Any suggestions where to take it in Modesto??

  • Nanie

What a nice letter Doug, I actually took the time to read it. We love you too.

  • Nanie

Dot (and Doug) I totally agree with what you said. To me, Doug is a “young man”, Hot, smart, and where the heck is he getting the “fat part”….????? You need to clean your mirror Doug!

My mother has a Lexus and the dealership offers her a 90,000 mile major service which is replacing the timing belt, water pump, and all drive belts. The price is about $950 minus 15% coupon. If she is not havng problems should she do it because Lexus reccomends it?

  • Cathy G
